As with many companies, the festive season and the arrival of a new year is a time for us as a company to evaluate the year that has past, and draw lessons that been learned along the way. For VIA, the New Year period represents a time when US and European sales teams visit our HQ office here in Taipei, which means it is great time to catch up and reconnect. This year we took the time to sit down with several key figures in the VIA family to have an informal chat about current company direction, and of course, our plans for the year ahead. The result is the VIA New Year 2020 Interview Series.
The first interview involves an interesting chat with US Director of Sales Ciaran Mac Neill. Ciaran has been with the company for well over a decade and has seen many changes in that time, giving him a unique perspective on the technologies and innovations that ultimately drive the winds of change in the broader technology industry.
Ciaran starts by outlining what he feels are the main changes that he has seen during his tenure at VIA, the transition from being a company focused on developing silicon solutions such as CPUs, chipsets and graphics processors, through to a gradually evolving product lineup that includes boards, systems and more recently complete solutions that include software. He explains how the creation of the Mini-ITX form factor eventually led to the development a more complete ecosystem that included chassis, power supplies and other components and accessories that customers required.
Ciaran then goes on to talk about how VIA is now focused on serving quickly evolving transportation and automotive markets, primarily with safety solutions that include surround view systems, ADAS, and driver monitoring solutions. He explains how the market for these kinds of technologies is growing, and how there are opportunities in several vertical sectors including fleet management, and also heavier vehicles used in construction, mining and other industries where injuries and fatalities are unfortunately far too common.
He goes on to mention how often the key to success lies in developing very specific solutions that meet the exact needs of the customer. One example he uses includes how mining vehicles require a great deal of specialized water-proof housing so that the computer system can withstand the daily wash down – a key requirement in that industry.
