We conclude our VIA New Year 2020 Interview series with an interesting chat with Giuseppe Amato, European Technical and Business Development Manager here at VIA. Working closely with customers in Europe, Giuseppe is uniquely positioned to offer insights on how European automotive markets are gradually embracing technology, especially in the area of in-vehicle safety.
Giuseppe starts by noting how the VIA Mobile360 D700 AI Dash Cam will be an important product for VIA in 2020, along with the VIA Mobile360 M800 Series, offering an upgrade path initially for existing commercial fleets and perhaps eventually also to individual car owners. He goes on to explain how ADAS systems will become a standard safety feature on all new cars, and how aftermarket adoption will continue to grow as drivers continue to realize the benefits of ADAS.
When discussing the European car manufacturing base, Giuseppe mentions the historical legacy of the auto industry in the region and the recognizable brands that are moving into developing newer hybrid and electric vehicles. He also notes how each of these iconic brands are today working towards the development of fully autonomous vehicles. Despite improvements in sensor and computer vision technology, and significant progress in AI development, Giuseppe predicts that level 5 autonomous driving will remain a distant reality for some time yet.
Giuseppe goes on to talk about the future of VIA and what the next five years may have in store for us. He sees enormous opportunities, specifically when it comes to AI development, an area where we can really harness our know-how and experience in processor platform design. Leveraging our ability to create CPU architecture designs, GPUs, chipsets and other ICs, means we are well placed to bring our expertise to the area of AI development.
