Pedestrian collisions can happen just as easily on construction sites as in warehouse and production facilities. It only takes a second for someone to take their eye off what is happening around them and glance at their smart phone.
To prevent such accidents, we have been developing our new VIA Mobile360 CESS (Construction Equipment Safety System) based on the proven people detection technology that we have implemented in the VIA Mobile360 FSS (Forklift Safety System). In the first round of field trials that we conducted using the Aktio Airman AX55U excavator, system and camera setup went without a hitch. Only minor calibrations of the cameras to adjust the field of view using the VIA WorkX app were required.
For the trials, we installed a 3PD Package of the system featuring two side and one rear people detection cameras. With these three cameras, the system supports a 240° – 300° people detection zone covering an area of between four and five meters around the vehicle depending on the camera installation height. The detection area can be configured with either a single (critical) or two zones (warning and critical) using the VIA WorkX smartphone app. A variety of voice, sound, and video alerts are available with the system and can also be configured by the app.
As part of the trials, we also integrated the optional 7” CVBS display in the cabin to provide visual people detection alerts as well as showing real-time feeds from all three cameras. Video footage of each incident can be automatically saved using a Micro SD card and retrieved on a smartphone using the VIA WorkX app. Check out this video to see the system in action on the Aktio Airman AX55U excavator.
We were very encouraged by the success of the field trial and plan to expand testing to include mini-excavators, mini-backhoe loaders, and other small and compact construction vehicles. We also offer a 2PD Package featuring front and rear pedestrian detection cameras as well as a driver camera that spots operator fatigue, smart phone usage, and smoking. This supports a detection zone of between 60° – 120° depending on the required detection sensitivity through its two cameras.
